The Art of Fusion

When Bamboo Weaving Meets Arita Pottery

In ZENS’ latest Starboard series, two millennium-old crafts—China’s Liu Family Bamboo Weaving (a National Intangible Cultural Heritage) and Japan’s Arita Ware—converge in a symphony of tradition and innovation.

ZENS Starboard Tea Set Part I - 1

Liu Family Bamboo Weaving: Guardians of Tactile Warmth

The Liu Family’s 2,300-year-old bamboo weaving technique, preserved through 120 handcrafted steps, transforms into a heat-insulating sleeve on the teapot neck.

Each strand, woven at a precise 0.1mm thickness, blocks 80% of heat while adding an organic texture—a nod to Sichuan’s bamboo forest heritage.

Arita Ware Kiln Transformation: Improvisation of Fire and Glaze

Sourced from Japan’s 400-year-old Arita kilns, the Extract - Union teacups undergo a mystical “kiln transformation” (yaobian).

High-temperature firing creates unique glaze patterns—no two pieces share the same swirls of “Mica Gold” or “Cinnabar Red,” making each set a wearable piece of art.

Storytelling for Global Audiences

Create a video series: "Crafts Across Borders"—showcase Arita-yaki’s glazing, Tokoname-yaki’s (salt-firing), and bamboo weaving, emphasizing the human touch behind each step.

Highlight "functional heritage": "These aren’t just tea sets—they’re 1000+ years of Asian tea culture optimized for modern life."

Modern Design with Ancient Souls

ZENS reinterprets heritage for contemporary life

  • The Philosophy of the 30° Sloped Rim: The 30° sloped rim of the teacup isn’t just aesthetic—it’s a temperature sensor. When tea exceeds 60°C, the thin ceramic rim warms subtly, guiding users to sip at the perfect moment—a modern twist on tea ceremony mindfulness.
  • Modular Travel Tea Set: The award-winning Starboard Travel Set (German Iconic Awards 2018) breaks down into a compact walnut case. Inside, a magnetic tea tray and dual Arita cups unfold for impromptu tea sessions anywhere—whether a mountain trail or a private jet.
